recently both nationally and in swing states, you know this poll looks like a lot of others. obama has advantages over romney on the economy and a range of issues. one thing that stood out in the poll is that a lot of voters didn't like how obama's handling the situation in libya. and the romney campaign sort of sees that as well which is why you see them hitting obama so hard on this lately. but there is still a problem here for romney. this is why the debates are so important. romney wants to change the fundamental structure of this race with this debate coming up next wednesday. remember, over 50 million people watched the first presidential debate in 2008. this is going to be a big moment coming up next week, fred, for mitt romney. >> well, let's shift to the u.s. senate and how pivotal any race could be. the democrats have a six-seat majority, but they're defending 23 seats in the election, with republicans defending just 10. so what would give the republicans a pretty good shot at seizing a 51-seat majority, but they also have a big problem and that is that race in missouri. >> y

during the primary season. you got a few times for both mitt romney and president obama to show their stuff, this first debate is huge. largely because the race is tight, in the battleground states, the president seems to be really gaining an advantage. and generally, you know, you can't decide as a voter to fire somebody until you're sure that the replacement can do a good job. this is that moment when you're going to have a huge audience and if you're mitt romney, you have to explain to american voters why you can be commander in chief, and why you would be the replacement for president obama. >> isn't so much of this, though, leading up to wednesday night, the lowering of the expectations game, but to quote candy crowley, whenno s she was talking about chris christie, apparently chris christie didn't get the memo, but we showed this poll that shows that americans very much so expect the president to win this debate with mitt romney. might that be a good thing for mitt romney goinging into this with the lower numbers? >> sure. lower -- i never talked to as many romney advisers

into the picture of romney obama campaign was trying to paper. there's one other big advantage to going early. as the air waves swing states became saturated with political ads now from both sides television stations are required to give the candidates discounted rate in the last 60 days before the election. if the discount apply only to candidates political parties and outside groups like super pack thief they are not entitled. issue, but guess what, mitt romney has now lost his edge on the economy. and president obama is now outpolling him on who is trusted more with the economy. so with that, what will happen when voters go into the voting booth, they will look at the economy and how both candidates will deal with economic issues, but they will always -- and this is even including when romney had an edge on the economy, they will always look at other issues because american voters are not monolithic. so if you're a latino and you go into the voting booth, you're going look at how these candidates deal with immigration. if you're a woman going into the voting booth, you're going look at how these candides have treated women's issues. by the way, it wasn't the democrats that put abortion on the front line. it wasn't the democrats who have talked about legitimate rape. so that was republicans that put it front and center. >> let me have amy jump in on this, because you're really the one who said the economy equals social issues, equals how people are going to vote effectively, if i understand you correctly.
